The majority of violent crimes happen at night, shine light into the darkness!

The worse thing that could happen is that you or a loved one needs a flashlight and one is not available. Danger lurks in the dark. FBI statistics say that the majority of violent crime happens in the dark. You can light up the world around you by making sure that you carry a high-quality flashlight. The lights that we offer here can light up an entire dark alley and make the dark parking lot much safer. These flashlights can be carried with you every day, most can easily fit in a pocket or in a purse. They can be used as striking devices and temporarily blind somebody that might want to hurt you. They are not like your Grandpa’s old flashlight. These are high-intensity flashlights.

I don’t know about you but when I was little my image of a flashlight was a big clunky plastic thing. It had a plastic switch, it took huge batteries and really didn’t put out much light anyway. We kept it in the junk/tool drawer and really it was more junk than a tool. The light had huge rings and dark spots in it and the batteries ran out quickly. It worked well enough inside of the house when all of the lights were out but otherwise it was useless.

Recent advancements in lighting technology have taken flashlights to the next level. There are many new types of bulbs but LED technology specifically has taken over the flashlight market. LEDs have enabled flashlights to become smaller in size, put out more light, and use less energy. A trifecta that rarely happens in the industry. You can now carry a flashlight on your keychain that is 10 times brighter than those old flashlights we all remember. The brightest tactical flashlights are well over 1000 lumens.

The beginning of this article is intended for the complete newbie to flashlights and covers what a tactical flashlight is, the anatomy of a flashlight and how to read an ANSI FL1 chart. We will also cover some situations that you might need a nice flashlight and some quick top buying tips to help you shop if you do not have time to read over the entire article. Later in the article, we will cover many different aspects of flashlights and get a little geeky for those that are flashaholics or want to learn about more specifics. Feel free to go to any other page while you are researching. Check out the overall top flashlights article or take a look at our huge comparison guide with currently over 100 flashlights (and growing) or read through our reviews. Happy reading.

What Is A Tactical Flashlight?

To properly describe what a tactical flashlight is we need to first define the word tactical.

Tac-ti-cal: of, relating to, or used for a specific plan that is created to achieve a particular goal in war, politics, etc. -merriam-webster

When we are talking about tactical flashlights we are focusing on the idea of winning in a warfare/combat situation. Since World War 2 there have been standard issue right angle head flashlights for soldiers. Since they help soldiers fight.

Combat Lights are made to work when you need them, when your life may be on the line. For this reason, they have much higher quality standards and are built with better materials than the typical flashlight. Most use aircraft-grade aluminum, are shockproof so they can be mounted to weapons, they have some level of waterproofing, and they are small. In short, they are very durable.

Tactical flashlights are usually very bright since being able to see is a key part of being able to succeed in most situations. Also, over a certain level of brightness can temporarily blind a person which is very useful for self-defense. Levels of brightness are measured in Lumens, check out our brightest flashlight article. The most common bulb used in modern tactical flashlights is the LED, there are also incandescent and xenon bulbs which have their pluses but they will be much harder to find. Some advantages to LEDs are that they are rated for 50000 hours of life which is over 5 years of continuous use and since there is no filament it is more shock resistant.

Why Would You Want to Carry a Tactical Flashlight

Aside from a pocket knife, the most useful tool that you could carry is a flashlight. Even if you are never going to use a flashlight for self-defense a quality torch can be used for countless things. Here are a few situations when having a good tactical flashlight would be nice.

As mentioned earlier modern tactical flashlights are designed to give someone an advantage in a combat situation. The hard-anodized aluminum can be used as a striking tool, many flashlights come with crenulated bezels that are shaped in a way that would help you to both break windows and faces. Also, just holding something in your hand will make your fists more devastating.

Next, the high lumens make it so you can temporarily blind any would-be attacker which could give you time to escape. If you mix together the ability to blind someone with the added striking force that you get from a tactical flashlight you have a dominating combination, imagine the devastation caused by hitting somebody in the face with the Elzetta Bravo. As a small warning though, if you are not a trained fighter it is always better to use the temporary blindness as added time to getaway.

Identify Things in The Dark

This is the main purpose of any flashlight. If you have a flashlight with you you will have peace of mind that any dark alley or parking lot can be illuminated. Some of the lights that we have here can illuminate things over a football field away. You no longer need to worry about what might be hiding in the dark.

Emergencies might mean that a natural disaster has knocked out the power or that someone is trying to shoot up the place. Having a light to see things in the dark or blind someone is invaluable. Also, in a survival or rescue situation, the most important thing is to be found. Any kind of signal could be the difference between life and death. Some flashlights like the SureFire Maximus come with dedicated SOS and Beacon flashing modes for this specific purpose.

Just Finding Stuff

I don’t know about you but I lose things all of the time, under the couch, under the bed, behind the desk, behind the dresser, etc…You know what I mean. You do not even know how many times you will be glad that you had a flashlight with you. Hey, a flashlight might even make it so you are not late for work when you are looking for your keys all over the place.

Top 5 Buying Tips For Finding The Best Tactical Flashlight in 2024

For the people that do not have time right now to read all of the material on this site, here is a quick and dirty summary of the top 5 things to look for to ensure that you are getting a quality product. Some of you may have a specific requirement that would make these tips change but for the general public and for the EDC enthusiast that is not a flashaholic these are some easy guidelines.

  1. Budget – You get what you pay for so unless it is a keychain flashlight or penlight most decent torches will start around $25-$30.
  2. Size – If you are buying an EDC flashlight how big can you comfortably have with you all of the time. Otherwise, if you are not keeping it with you all of the time how much space do you have to store it?
  3. Power Source – Do you want disposable or rechargeable batteries? And, do you want a standard size battery (easy to find) or a special battery (more power)?
  4. How Much Light – It takes at least 60-100 lumens to cause temporary blindness.
  5. Durability – I would go with type III hard-anodized aircraft-grade aluminum with an LED bulb that is rated to at least IPX7 waterproofing.

Tactical Light Buyers Guide

Tactical Handheld Flashlights

Handheld tactical lights are designed to be extremely durable, as they need to stand up to some of the harshest conditions. To ensure that they can stand up to the worst conditions most manufacturers are going to use weapon-grade aluminum for the body along with a textured grip. The better grip allows you to use the light as a striking tool without worrying about it slipping out of your grasp. Top-quality handheld lights are small enough that they can be easily carried around for everyday use. The smaller size also allows you to easily operate the light with one hand leaving your other hand free for other tasks.

Handheld tactical lights are some of the brightest ones out there. Handheld tactical lights need to be bright enough to light up a dark room, but they also might need to temporarily blind a potential suspect.  A handheld tactical light is something that you want to be able to depend on at all times, you want to know that your light is going to work in a life or death situation.

A simple but effective tool that we like to use with our tactical flashlight setup is the Thrym SwitchBack 2.0 Flashlight Ring. It allows you to use your flashlight in positions that work better for pistol holding and just makes it easier to use and harder to drop.

Elzetta Bravo

Elzetta High Output Bravo High/Low Tail Cap Flashlight with Crenellated Bezel Ring

One thing that makes the Elzetta Bravo one of the most popular Elzetta models is its Crenellated Bezel Ring. Other features that make the light a popular choice include the High Output AVS head and the High-Low Tailcap. These three features come together to create an excellent tactical light that most find convenient for every day carrying as well. Powered by two CR123A batteries the Elzetta Bravo offers automatic voltage sensing technology and fully potted electronics.

The Crenellated Bezel offers scalloped edges that are smooth enough to prevent injury during normal use, but rough enough to be used as a striking implement during an emergency. Underneath the bezel is a 7/8 inch thick durable optical lens that withstands various striking levels while providing an excellent beam quality. The standard lens offers a decent throw and spill balance with a distance of 617 feet making it an excellent choice for long-distance illumination. The High-Low Tailcap offers a click-style switch that powers the light to the full output of 650 lumens. To reduce output to 15 lumens simply loosen the cap, no clicking involved.

Brightest Tactical Flashlight:

[amazon link=”B075TYB67V” title=”Acebeam L30 II” /]

Acebeam L30 II

Acebeam has been making a great name for themselves in the flashlight arena. 5 years ago they were one of the second rate brands but they have quickly proved the quality of thier products and they are now considered among the top brands on the market. From here making the jump to the tactical or law enforcement levels of duability and reliabiliy is another hurdle and they are on their way.

The Acebeam L30 II is the brightest flashlight that has a dedicated tactical tail switch that lets you go straight to turbo. There is one other flashlight that is brighter (Nitecore TM9K) but the turbo mode only runs when you hold the button down, you can not click into the turbo mode. The Acebeam’s 4000 lumens come from a single XHP70.2 LED emitter. It can be powered by the included 21700 5100mAh high drain battery or a 18650 with the included battery adapter. It can also run off of 2 primary CR123A batteries.

Something that we really like that Acebeam did with this flashlight is make it a tactical light with the single output tail switch while also having a side switch with multiple modes. As always we really like the firefly mode since we are in a small space and just need enough light more often than needing 4000 lumens.

Tactical Pistol Light

A pistol light, which can also be referred to as a handgun light, is a tactical light that mounts directly to our handgun via a Picatinny or Weaver rail. Pistol lights are an excellent tool, but they must be chosen with care. As a true tactical light, you want to know that you can count on your pistol light working when you need it, especially in one of those life or death situations. One thing you must keep in mind with your pistol light is that where you are pointing the light you are also pointing the pistol. With that being said these lights should only be used in situations where your gun is already out!

As a tactical light, you don’t want just any old pistol light, you want something that is durable. You need your pistol light to stand up to numerous bullets being fired from your handgun; you don’t want something that is going to fall apart after only a few rounds. Pistol lights can be mounted directly below the barrel or they can be mounted onto the side via an offset mount, which one you choose will depend on you. Pistol lights often come with a tail cap switch, but high-quality ones will provide you with the ability to switch the tail cap switch for a pressure switch.

Tactical Rifle Flashlight

Rifle flashlights are very similar to pistol lights; they are both designed to be mounted onto your weapon to provide you with light while keeping both hands on your gun. The difference between these two weapon lights is what kind of weapon they are mounted too. Pistol lights, for the most part, are designed to be mounted to pistols or handguns, although some of these lights feature kits that allow them to be mounted to long guns. Rifle flashlights are not designed to be mounted to the smaller guns, these lights are designed to be mounted to the longer style guns like rifles and they will typically be able to use a pressure switch.

One of the great things about rifle flashlights is that all of them currently on the market use LED emitters, so they usually exceed the minimum 50 lumens needed to disorient a person’s night vision. With lumens not being a concern the other things that you need to look at when selecting a rifle flashlight are how reliable the light is, how much output it has and what kind of beam distance it will provide, how easy it is to operate, and how small and lightweight the light really is.

SureFire M600DF Scout Light

The lightweight and compact design of the SureFire M600DF Scout makes the light an excellent choice for a weapon-mounted light. The light is controlled via a Z68 tailcap and a simple press activates a momentary-on feature, while a full, deep press allows for constant on and off mode. Tactical Headlamp

Headlamps are a great choice for those who are looking for 100% hands-free lighting. The main purpose of a headlamp is to direct the entire amount of light to a specific area, which is why the lamp of the light is usually worn in the center of the head. When choosing a headlamp the number of lumens is going to tell you how bright the light is, but the beam distance is what you really want to pay attention to. The beam distance is going to tell you how just how far your headlamp is going to be able to produce useable light.

Another important aspect is the beam type. With headlamps, you have three basic choices: flood, spot, or adjustable. Flood lamps are ideal for close up repair work or ordinary outdoor tasks. Flood lamps are used when light doesn’t need to reach long distances. Spot lamps are best for hiking, climbing, and other similar activities because the beam is ideal for lighting up things in the distance. Adjustable headlamps offer the best of both worlds, as they provide you with both a flood and spot option, so you have the right kind of beam when you need it most. For tactical use, we feel that a headlamp must have a red light since red is the best color to retain night vision and many times you will use your headlamp just to read something quickly.

Tactical Night Vision

Night vision devices are a must-have for tactical situations because sometimes you just have to be able to see in the dark. Some handheld tactical light, as well as several weapon-mounted lights, come with infrared modes to help preserve your night vision, but some situations call for straightforward night vision devices, such as monocular and goggles. When looking at night vision devices you need to consider the generation grade levels as this affects their overall performance. Obviously the newer the generation the better the technology is going to be, but that doesn’t always mean a Gen 3 is going to be better than a Gen 2, you always have to look at everything that the product has to offer.

In this article, we only cover two-night vision devices: monocular and goggles. Monoculars are night vision devices that provide no magnification and use a single eye unit. In many cases, these style of night vision devices is the most versatile of them all, as they can be worn on the head or even mounted to the front of a rifle scope. How monocular devices can be used will depend on the brand and model purchased. Goggles allow for both eyes to be used when viewing, but like monoculars, they do not provide any kind of magnification. Goggles can be head-mounted and come in two different styles. The first style is a single image tube with two eyepieces, while the other is a dual image tube with two eyepieces. One of the great things about goggle style night vision devices is how natural they feel when you first start wearing them, they don’t take much getting used to at all.
